Breaking down complex or tricky standards into digestible “I Can” statements can be very helpful for students and teachers. This post will share free 5th grade I Can Statements for literacy, including ideas on how to use them in your classroom.
This free set of I Can Statements is aligned to the 5th grade common core standards and includes statements for reading standards (literature, informational, and foundational skills), writing standards, speaking & listening standards, and language standards.
The I Can Statements are written in kid-friendly language while still maintaining the rigor and vocabulary required. My goal with I Can Statements is always to make them more understandable without taking away from the rigor necessary.
Each page includes:
Here are some ideas for using these free I Can Statements in your classroom:
1. Post them as your daily objectives. Refer to them when introducing a new skill and when reviewing a skill.
2. Display during small group reading instruction to focus your lesson and put the words of the skill right in front of the students.
3. Use these in reading centers or literacy stations. The student can refer to the statements to know exactly what they are practicing in a center.
4. Use them to guide your exit slips. Refer to the I Can Statement prior to giving the exit slip, connect the two, and then explain that the exit slips are being used to see how the students are progressing toward mastery.
5. Use them to have students self-assess. Refer to the I Can Statement and have students reflect and self-assess their own understandings and whether they feel they have met the expectation of the statement.
I recommend storing I Can Statements in page protectors in a binder. Then you can simply take out the page protector with the statement you need and you are good to go.
